Mamma needs a night lamp

Katherine Paterson, author of Bridge to Terabithia, wrote, “It's like the smarter you are, the more things can scare you.”  We are looking for a 33-word explanation of what scares you (or your character) -

Mine is the night. I can't sleep if I am alone. I keep a bible near my hand all night. Unknown, unexplained there roams something in the spaces between the darkness and light.

Of the undead, dead and living
Spirits swaying along dim passages
Terrified of evil beings
Seeing the malice within me
Claiming me along its path of gore.

  1. Being alone at night is a common fear , that when the lights are off , the bad things can get in. (I think that is why nightlights are so popular).
but it's the WAY you wrote it that was wonderful..like the wisps in the picture..it came to us little by little. Hoping that you awake when the light comes.

    nice, nice write.

    1. So lovely to read your kind words. I was looking at some really gross ghost images and then this picture caught my eye. Its actually Rolls Royce latest model teaser photo. The new car is called Wraith, a Scottish dialect word for Ghost !

  3. You described this fear so well. Words tiptoeing along that haunted hallway.

  4. The dark makes me uneasy, too. The spirits swaying in dim passages is an eerie image!

  6. Love the writing. You've encapsulated the universal fear of the night in a tight 33 words.

  8. I found "mine is the night" to be incredibly lyrical. The idea that we're all afraid of something, and you're being brave enough to tell your story. Great job with the prompt. Don't forget to vote.

  10. "Unknown, unexplained there roams something in the spaces between the darkness and light. " I know this wasn't part of your 33 words...but so powerfully poetic

  11. The night (and those that float amongst it) is a pretty big fear to address - you did so brilliantly!
